It’s that time of the year again folks! That one day in the year where lovers go all out with the PDA and profess their love for each other in the big bloody Valentine arena. I call it an arena because sometimes it feels as if couples are trying to one-up each other on the scale of sugary sweetness. The bigger the bouquet, the better! The more posh the resto, the more loved she will feel! Hey why don’t you throw in some Belgian chocolates and fancy jewelry while you’re at it? That will really win her over! And now with the presence of social media, it gets even bloodier, or sweeter (depends on how you look at it) with pictures of flowers, hearts, chocolates and all things that reek of L-O-V-E. See, it’s not enough that you know he loves you, it has to be posted on your Facebook wall to really make it count.
Hey don’t get me wrong. I’m not mocking the whole Valentine ritual. I think it’s fun! In fact, I really find it amusing to see couples who either naturally or forced, act all googley-eyed with each other. In fact just this morning, I saw two couples who were eerily dressed alike for the occasion. Wow, talk about hardcore no?
Believe it or not, I used to be one of those people. I would expect nothing less than the grandest of all gestures from my man and acted as if I was entitled to it. I expected him to churn up such a bold display of his affection for me and expected that he should have prepared days in advance to make every single detail perfect. Yes ladies and gentlemen, I was once a Valentine-zilla.
About a decade ago, (we’ve been married for 5 years and was dating for 8 1/2 years before that) so yes, we’ve been together for a very long time… we met for dinner in a restaurant on Valentine’s day. When we finally got to our table, he asked me to close my eyes because he had a big surprise for me. So I closed my eyes and I could barely contain the excitement. The moment I opened them, I saw this huge cake box sitting on the table. My boyfriend then (husband now) had this cheerful smile on his face as he proudly presented his official V-Day gift for me… a big round cake. And you want to know what happened next? I cried on the spot. Little old me was expecting to receive flowers. Him on the other hand, looked so weirded out by the situation that he didn’t know whether to take back the box or just pat me on the back and say “there…there”. The poor guy didn’t know what hit him. And yes, needless to say it made for a very very awkward Valentine’s date. haha. God was I dramatic or what?! But of course that was a gazillion years ago. Now if I were given a choice, I’d much rather have a platter of sushi than a bouquet of flowers. Guess I got boring that way. haha.
But for those of you who still love celebrating V-Day in a big majestic way, here are some snaps, both new and old that are all suggestive of this all too fluffy day of hearts. Enjoy!
So whether you’re pro or anti-Valentine’s, I do hope your every day is filled with just the right amount of mush that your heart can handle. Have a happy hearts day!
P.S. And please, men aren’t mind readers. If you want flowers, tell him you want flowers. It will save you the drama.
